The Fall Of The Airbus A340
The Airbus A340 debuted as an aircraft attempting to push the plane maker further into markets traditionally dominated by Boeing. While the aircraft amassed orders, it wasn't the commercial hit Airbus may have imagined. This is the story of how the Airbus A340 slowly but surely became favoured no more.

    All of legacy United’s PW powered 757-222s were retired after the merger with Continental Airlines in 2010. Approximately 30 of those aircraft were acquired by Fed Ex and modified for cargo operations. All of the remaining 757s currently in United’s fleet, came from Continental. United Airlines currently operates forty 757-200 aircraft and twenty-one of only fifty-five of the 757-300 models ever built. For the purposes of my comment for this video, United Airlines has the same tough decisions to make about when to retire, and maybe more importantly, how to replace, this venerable workhorse. For full disclosure, I hired on as aircraft maintenance technician with legacy United Airlines in 1989. I’ll be putting in my retirement paperwork next month. So to everyone who has ever flown on a United Airlines airplane, let me say this: “Thank you for choosing United Airlines for your travel plans today. We know that you have a choice of airlines and travel options. Your choice to fly with us today means very much to those of us who support the day-to day operation of a major airline from behind the scenes. As you wait for your flight, maybe you have noticed all the people scurrying around your airplane, loading bags, pumping fuel, doing who-knows-what. Just know that before your airplane arrived at your gate, many hands touched that airplane to insure that the aircraft you are flying on today, is in an absolutely airworthy condition. People you may never see, fix everything from broken window shades and clogged toilets, to clogged engine fuel filters and bald landing gear tires. We do this for you, the customer. For without you having decided to fly on our airplane today, there’s no reason for us to do what we do. We, as aircraft maintenance technicians, chose this field because we love aviation and being around airplanes. But we never for one minute, forget that our own families depend on the quality of the work that we do. So, thank you once again, for choosing United Airlines for your travel plans today. We appreciate your business.” If you’re an AMT with another major airline, feel free to plagiarize this and “insert airline here.” We’re all family.

    May off had It's faults and unfortunately wasn't the success that Airbus had hoped for, but the 340-600 will go down as one of the most stunning looking passenger aircraft of time, to see one today is a relatively rare event but once seen its never forgotten.

    Actually the A321-XLR has a longer range than the 757-200 but yes it won’t match the seating capacity of the 757-300 but it will definitely be a better option than the 757-200 and the reason being is that the XLR has two seating capacity options one is 250 passengers or the other is 285 passengers and the flight range is 4000 800 miles more than any of the 757S will manage

    American Airlines flight attendant here. 25 years. My heart belongs to the 757 and we have said goodbye at American. Fast AF airplane. Loved EVERY take off. However, a nightmare to work on in the back. This was when we were serving full meals in the economy. The passengers in front are done with their meals and want the trash collected and we are still in the long aisle serving AND the need to use the restroom as well because we are in the aisle. That's why the 767 was ideal for passengers as a "heavy" aircraft. So glad to see the old girls flying around still with UA and Delta. AND YES, pilots love flying this plane. Like a sportscars in the air.

    Delta still has 127 757s in use. United has 77 757s, so Delta is the biggest in the world. Probably will move to the Airbus 320neo and 321neo planes in some kind of mix of those two planes since Boeing has nothing that fits the bill at all.

    ..Being could have don it has they not cancelled what would have been it's replacement in 2011. Instead the post McD&D management decided tp put a; their eggs in the 737 basket, at the time a nearly half century old concept. They revived the MMA which would have been the "follow on" and then cancelled that. The 757 was mpre in the the 707-320 / D20 O51B market. being as large (asd the former with the performance of hte latter. At the time of its entry into service it actually surpassed the efficiency projections. In spite of hte -200s range what hurt it were the more strict ETOPs regulations of the day. Maybe it's time for the 757-X.

    I remember observing the A340-200/300 at international airports in the early 2000s, and having the feeling that they seemed to be really under-powered with the tiny jet engines. This feeling was even more pronounced when there was an A330 or a B767 parked at the next gate right beside it. The -500 and -600 variants with the bigger fans give a more balanced appearance.

    I've flown a zillion miles on Delta 757s both as a pilot and as a frequent flyer. There are 757-200s and the even longer 757-300s. As a passenger in the very last row of tourist, the time to embark and disembark passengers is extremely long and arduous. I hope whatever eventually replaces the 757 has TWIN AISLES! If flight time is 2 hours, but it takes 40 minutes to load and 20 minutes to unload, that route time is actually 3 hours. TWIN AISLES, please.

    The a340 is the most underpowered widebody ever manufactured. Its gas-guzzling engines really undermine the shift towards more fuel-efficient jets of airlines. As a result, it should be phased out to make room for more efficient aircrafts such as the 787, a350 or the future 777x ( if Boeing can expedite the certification of this aircraft type).

  • @Sacto1654
    @Sacto1654 День тому

    I completely agree that the A340 was a plane that just missed out on being a huge success. People forget that ETOPS 180 certification had come to the Boeing 767-200(ER) and 767-300(ER) and the Airbus A300B4-600R and A310-300 by 1986, so it made longer-range twin-engined flights far more viable. And the final nail in the coffin for the A340 was the arrival of the Boeing 777 in 1995, which had ETOPS 180 certification "out of the box." Small wonder why Airbus was reluctant to build the A330-200 due to fears of impinging on A340 sales, but once it was offered it became a huge success for long-distance transoceanic flights.

  • @tomosb95
    @tomosb95 День тому

    The A340 only failed because the FAA changed rules benefiting the big twins like the B777. As the A340=300 shares the same wing as the A330 all the design changes made to enhance the A340 were carried across to the A330 making it the fantastic plane it is today. The A330 is the new A340, the A330neo being a brilliant alternative even to the B787.

      @user-us7it8gn4e , "Americans changed the rules". As if it was the the United State's fault that the 340 was an inefficient, underpowered aircraft from the start. EASA in concert with the FAA established ETOPs parameters...which made way for the development of the 777, A330, 787, A350, etc. There wasn't some nefarious scheme by the Americans to do away with the A340...goog grief.

    Boeing has had every chance to re-invent the 757 but didnt. A 321 is not a replacement but with Boeing showing loyalty to Airbus they might have actually shot themselves in the foot. I'm also not sure that a replacement can be made that takes into account fuel, performance, etc. Had Boeing put a replacement for the 57 out there with the same or better performance Delta and others would have flocked to buy it.

    The Airbus a321 XLR is popular with airlines, but it would have been better for Airbus to put a bigger wing to carry more fuel than a center fuel tank, since the aircraft could have more cargo capacity. Also having a wider wing span could help with takeoff performance. Most runways do not have that problem. The Boeing 757 can takeoff from shorter runways not because it has more powerful engines but also a bigger wing span. There are some airports such as Vagar Airport in the Faroe Islands that extending the current runway is impractical due to the runway being on top of a plateau and not enough area left to extend the runway. Also the the a321 could have extended the cabin length to have more seating capacity. That might have cost more upfront, but the certification process might have been less strenuous than what Airbus had chosen.
